Refined in the Fire

When life presents us with unexpected and difficult answers, it can feel overwhelming. Recently, after months of hospitalizations, we learned that my daughter has McArdle Disease, a rare and challenging condition in which her muscles cannot break down glycogen, a sugar vital for muscle energy. This diagnosis will change the landscape of our lives, altering our expectations for her future and reminding us how fragile and precious our health truly is. We’re stepping into a new reality, trying to understand the limits McArdle Disease will impose on her body while seeking ways to help her live a full and meaningful life despite it.

Like so many of life’s unexpected discoveries, this answer didn’t come easy, nor does it end with a simple solution. Instead, it places us on a new journey filled with questions, adjustments, and resilience. But as challenging as it is, it also reminds me of the profound responsibility we have to guide and support one another through our hardest moments. We’ve always talked about her dreams, ideas about her future, and visions of her achievements. Now, we hold all of that while also embracing a new perspective, one grounded in adapting to limitations but determined to not let them define her.

In times like these, I am reminded of the words in Isaiah 40:31, where we are told that those who hope in the Lord will find their strength renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles, run without growing weary, and walk without fainting. This promise, to find strength and resilience through our trust in God, feels more real to me now than ever. It’s a promise I hold close as we face the reality of McArdle Disease. God doesn’t promise us a life free of hardship, but He promises that He will walk with us through it, empowering us to endure with a grace and strength beyond our own understanding.

As a parent, I know that my role, like always, will be to walk beside her, advocate for her, encourage her, and help her learn how to live well within the boundaries of this new reality. It’s a balancing act of guiding her without holding her back, of respecting the limitations of her muscles while also encouraging her to pursue her dreams, though they may look different than they once did. And in this, I realize that we’re not alone. God is with us every step of the way, and He is giving us both strength and insight to navigate this path.

This journey, though just beginning and already daunting, has deepened my faith and reliance on God. When our strength feels insufficient, His strength is made perfect in our weakness. We are called to a new level of trust, one that releases our need for control and leans wholly into His loving guidance. As we pray, we find peace knowing that He has a plan for her life, one filled with hope and purpose, even though it may be a modification from what we had envisioned.

With each new day, each doctor’s appointment, each specialist, and each moment of frustration or uncertainty, we are learning to lean on God. Our faith reminds us that He is our anchor, our sustainer, and our hope. We may not know exactly what the future holds, but we trust the One who holds it. And in that trust, we find rest. He will give us the wisdom we need, the patience we require, and the courage to face each day with grace.

Through this journey, my prayer is that our family will not only endure but that we will be refined by the fire of this experience, finding joy in unexpected places and relying on God more deeply than ever. Our hope is unwavering, not because we are strong, but because He is. I will keep lifting up my daughter in faith, confident that the same God who renews our strength also holds her in His hands, guiding her life and giving her purpose, one day at a time.
